Farewell to Discovery

Amber's taking a little break today so I wanted to share with you an event that I'm sure brought goosebumps to many, especially those living in or visiting Florida.

On Wednesday I was out in the backyard with the dogs for a quick ball-playing session.  At 11:53 AM I noticed our Jack Russell, Rusty, (you will meet him in another post of "Meet Da Pack") was starting to get nervous.  He always seems to sense impending doom, whether it comes in the form of a thunderstorm, rain, or anything else that he doesn't accept as "normal".  Sure enough, it came ...... the big sonic boom of the
Shuttle Discovery re-entering the atmosphere over Central Florida.  There were two rapid "booms" that could actually be felt on the ground.  After living here for 19 years, we've become used to the sonic booms of returning shuttles, but Wednesday's was different because it was like saying goodbye to an old friend.  It was the final flight of the Shuttle Discovery.  After the boom, we went into the house to watch the final landing of Discovery on television.

The following video was taken from my front porch during the March 13, 2009, launch of Discovery.

*****
This video was one of the last night launches of Discovery on August 28, 2009.  This one was also taken from my front porch.

You will have to be a little patient with this video because you won't be able to see Discovery until about 26 seconds after the start of the video.

Farewell, Discovery!
Thank you for 27 years of excellent service!

Goodbye Old Friend.

Phantom and Ciara are both very happy we are far enough away that we couldn't hear those booms, but we do thank the many crews of Discovery for their time and work. You have some great video to remember Discovery.

OH MY STARS!!!
First of all I never thought about hearing the sonic boom that must be amazing, well not for the puppies!!

The number of miles the Discovery has flown blew my mind.
Thank you for sharing these beautiful videos...and we're all thankful for a safe mission and return.

That is just SO incredible to watch! I think my spotted sister would be traumatized forever if she ever felt or heard the boom. She already gets so stressed out when there's rain & thunderstorms!

Awesome, awesome, awesome!! One of my dreams is to go to a shuttle launch or at least get to see the shuttle re-entering in person. Guess I need to come visit you in Florida for the next launch!! :) One of my good friends that works at NASA (my dad also works there) actually got to go to a shuttle launch in Florida last year...I was so jealous.

Oh wow... I heard that this would be the final one. So sad. We were out there a few years ago and did tours and were saying 'wouldn't it be awesome to be here for a launch'. You must live very close? Love the area there, we had a great time. Thanks for sharing this post. I'm glad I found you.

You've been there for pieces of history. We're not sure we'd be thrilled about the sonic booms but it sure did signal the safe return of the shuttle.

I am sad that the space program appears to be winding down. I watched the very first space shuttle landing at work and cried with joy when it touched down.

Thank you SO much for showing this. Mum and D-Guy were in Florida late October to early November last year. During the time they were there, a shuttle was supposed to launch and they were going to watch for the FIRST time. Unfortunately that was when a cold front moved in and it became very windy and rainy, so the shuttle didn't launch during their time there. "Sonic Boom" sounds so cooooool!

OH, and I think you mentioned about Rusty your JRT. If he tests negative for Cushing's, and yet he still shows Cushing's symptoms (excessive drinking, urination, insatiable appetite, etc), then you may have to test for Atypical Cushing's where the hormone cortisol is normal, but secondary hormones are elevated causing the same Cushingnoid symptoms. Treatment for it differs from regualr Cushing's.
